Scars can often be unsightly or troublesome, especially when they are bulky or thickened; fortunately are often amenable to improvement.

The potential range of treatment options include:

• Use of silicone based pads and ointments
• Injection of steroid within the scar to promote softening and remodelling of the dense collagen with the scar
   
• Surgical revision. Not infrequently, excision of the scar and re-closure with a meticulous multilayer repair, and potentially re-orienting the direction of some or all of the scar can provide a very worthwhile improvement.
